Search in User Interface for formula

I am trying to use the "find" search functionality in the user interface.

I print a label with a barcode using a formula that combines a batch number and a product number. This creates a unique 8 digit code for each product.

When I do a search using this barcode, it does not find the formula.

If I create a text field and  trigger on update script of text_barcode := Barcode then the search will return the result I want.

Do I need to make the barcode field into an something other than a formula to make it searchable?

The manual states search uses data fields, so it seems a formula is a no-go for "find". I just want to make sure I have this correct.
